VolleyballGator Volleyball in Europe 2004

May 10-22, 2004

Dear Gator Fans,

The Gators finally headed south to warmer weather, sort of. We arrived in Leverkusen (picture Milwaukee), the home of Bayer Aspirin. Leverkusen is also home to Florida Gator Alum, and recent UF Hall of Fame Inductee, Gudula Staub. We met Gudi and her family on the boat dock of the Rhine River in Koln before our cruise departed. Despite beautiful scenery, I found myself more interested in talking volleyball with Gudi. As the only female coach in the 1st Division of Germany, raising a young child - a boy no less, AND finishing second in the league, we had much in common. The only thing we didn't discuss was tomorrow's game plan.

Mary Wise and former Gator great Gudi Staub enjoy time together Sunday on the Rhein River cruise.

This evening was one of the few times the group has split for a meal. We were anxious to hear just which of the many restaurants and cafes along the Rhine the players would choose. For Jane, Amber, Michelle, and Marcie their choice was none other than KFC. OK, so maybe we haven't all acclimated to the European way.

No matter what the food choice we did share this much in common: every one of us was overwhelmed by the Dom Cathedral. If you haven't seen it, not to worry - amongst our group there had to be some 100 pictures taken.

Tomorrow it's the Gators vs. the former Gator (but always a Gator), Gudi and her Bayer Leverkusen team.
