Volunteer Assistant Coach


Mike Hoctor is now in his ninth year with the University of Florida men's tennis team as a volunteer assistant coach.

Hoctor has been coaching tennis since 1968, as a high school coach and USPTA tennis teaching professional at the Singleton Avenue Courts in Titusville, Fla. He has taught group and private lessons to adults and juniors for 30 years. As the local tennis pro he ran numerous sanctioned junior tournaments and headed up the city's junior tennis development program. The first four years of his high school coaching career were spent at Titusville High School, where he coached the Boys and Girls tennis team and taught science. Coach Hoctor moved to Astronaut High School when it opened in 1972. He began by teaching science and in two years moved into the guidance department. His coaching assignment was boys’ tennis. He retired from Astronaut High in May of 2002 as the only coach the team ever had after 30 seasons.

Hoctor finished his overall coaching career with a record of 440-100 (.815) and went 353-81 (.813) during 30 years at Astronaut High School where he led the team to 17 Cape Coast Conference Championships and 19 district titles. He also guided Astronaut High School to three state championships, four runner-up finishes and four appearances in the state regionals. Under Coach Hoctor, 34 individual players won state singles or doubles championships.

Hoctor was born Dec. 5, 1944 in Biddeford Maine and graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. in Science Education in 1967 and garnered a Masters Degree in Science Education in 1968. He and his wife Lorraine have three children – Dan, Tom and Jim.

  • 1992 Southeast Regional Coach of the Year 
  • 1994 Meritorious Service Award by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association 
  • 1994 elected to the Florida Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame 
  • 1997 Co Author of USTA published book "Coaching Tennis Successfully"
