Michael Hegarty
Assistant Coach

Michael Hegarty is in his second year as assistant men's tennis coach at Florida. Prior to joining the Gator program for the 2001-02 season, Hegarty spent four years as head coach at Fresno State University where he compiled a 76-33 (.697) record and advanced to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Prior to his time with the Bulldogs, Hegarty was an assistant in the Southeastern Conference at Kentucky, Arkansas and his alma mater, Auburn.

After being hired as head coach at Fresno State, the Bulldogs became a consistent figure on the national stage, finishing the 2000 season ranked No. 15 in the nation by the ITA after posting a 24-5 record. Six Bulldogs have played in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships under Hegarty. His 1999 FS team won the WAC Tournament Championship for only the second time in school history and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.

FS finished the 2001 season at 18-9 with a No. 24 ranking. Among Hegarty's players at Fresno was three-time All-American Peter Luczak, who completed the 2000-01 season with a 27-1 singles record and was named the ITA's National Senior Player of the Year. Luczak was an NCAA Singles qualifier and also earned a berth in the doubles field with David Mullins. That duo earned All-America honors as a doubles team, making Luczak the first Bulldog ever to earn All-America status for both singles and doubles in the same season.

Hegarty played at Auburn from 1990-93, earning a Top 20 ITA singles ranking and a berth in the 1992 NCAA Singles Championship field. Hegarty went from the plains to the professional tennis tour where he earned a world ranking of No. 284 and competed in the U.S. and Australian Opens along with the Lipton Championship (now the Ericsson).

A two-time Academic All-SEC honoree, Hegarty returned to Auburn in 1994 as an assistant coach while completing his degree in journalism. Hegarty served as an assistant coach for the 1995-96 season with Arkansas and held the same position for the 1996-97 season at Jackson's alma mater, the University of Kentucky. The Wildcats would go on to post a 20-8 record that year and end the season ranked No. 5 in the nation, still the highest final ranking in UK history.

Hegarty is a native of Melbourne, Australia, where he was one of the top ranked junior players in the world.
