National/International Competition:
Qualified for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials, placing 14th in the 200-meter backstroke (2:07.15) and 22nd in the prelims of the 100 back (57.98)...qualified for Summer Senior Nationals in 1995, placing 16th in the 200 back (2:03.67) and 34th in the 100 back (59.70)...two-time Junior National champion, winning both the 100- (58.67) and 200 back (2:04.86) at the 1994 Summer Nationals.

1998-99:
Had best NCAA performance of his career, earning All-American honors and establishing new UF record with runner-up finish in the 200 back finals (1:42.21)...Also, individually, placed 10th in the 100 back, setting a new personal best by touching in 47.75 to earn honorable mention All-American...Collected honorable mention All-American honors as member of three Gator relay teams, including the 400 free relay which took 14th (2:56.90), 800 free relay which placed 15th (6:34.34), and 400 medley relay which touched in 16th (3:18.56)...At the SEC Championships, defended his 200 back title by clocking the then-nation's fastest time and winning the conference crown in 1:42.39...Placed third in the 100 back with an NCAA automatic time of 47.80...Took sixth in the 200 IM (1:51.11)...Finished eighth overall in the individual standings at SECs with 48.5 points...Additionally swam on the third-place 800 free relay, and fourth-place 200- and 400 medley relays.

1997-98:
At NCAAs, received three All-American honorable mentions as a member of the 13th-place 200 medley relay, 14th-place 400 medley relay and 15th-place 800 free relay...Also finished 19th in the 100 back (48.29) and 21st in the 200 back (1:46.95)...At the SEC Championships, swam the second-fastest time in Florida history and third-best time nationally for the season to win the 200 back in a Stephen C. O'Connell Center pool-record time of 1:42.83, after entering the race as the fifth seed...Also took fourth in the 100 back (47.99) and eighth in the 200 IM (1:51.32)...reset personal-best in the 100 back as lead off of the fifth-place 400 medley relay with a time of 47.93...Additionally, swam on the second-place 400 free relay, third-place 800 free relay and fifth-place 200 medley relay.

1996-97:
Earned five All-American honors at NCAAs, placing 16th in the 200 back (1:48.65) and swimming on the ninth-place 400 medley relay, 11th-place 200- and 800 free relays, and 12th-place 200 medley...At SECs, finished eighth in both the 100 (49.32) and 200 back (1:46.78) and 14th in the 200 IM (1:51.15)...Also swam on the second-place 800 free relay, fourth-place 400 free relay, fourth place 200 medley relay and fifth-place 400 medley.

High School:

1996 graduate of Cherry Creek High School...five time Colorado High School state champion, winning the 100-yard back (49.58), 200 IM (1:49.62), 100 fly (51.82), 50 free (20.91) and 100 free (45.00)...13-time high school All-American...state record holder in the 100- and 200 back and 200 IM...two-time Colorado High School Swimmer of the Year...helped Cherry Creek H.S. to the 1994 Public School National Title...team captain of high school squad and three-year selection as most valuable swimmer of club team...swam for Cherry Creek H.S. under Kirk Price and Aces Swim Club under Eric Craven.

Personal:
Born Matthew Aaron Cole on Jan. 9, 1978, in Orange, Calif...son of Larry and Jolene Cole...enjoys golf and biking...Former coaches lured him to Florida...lists former Gator Great and gold-medal butterflier Anthony Nesty as an idol...majoring in recreation.
