Sunday February 26, 2006M. Golf Third After First Round of the Puerto Rico Classic

Rio Grande, Puerto Rico --

The fifth-ranked University of Florida Mens Golf team shot an opening round score of 284 (-4) on Sunday at the Puerto Rico Classic. Senior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) led the team by carding a 68 (-4) on the par-72, 6,945-yard course at the Rio Mar Resort.

For the second consecutive tournament Stegmaier sits on of the leader board following the first round. Stegmaier, who has finished in the top-10 at the Puerto Rico Classic the last two seasons, has carded scores under-par in three of his last four rounds. He is currently tied with Georgias Brenden Todd, who carded a 68 (-4).

I think the best thing that has happened to us this spring is Brett playing as well as we know he can, Florida head coach Buddy Alexander said. We have had a very positive start to the spring and today was no exception. There were more positives than negatives today.

Senior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) rebounded from last weeks performance at the Gator Invitational as one of three Gators who carded scores at par or under. Every shot a two-under-par score of 70 and is in a solid position to earn his third top-25 finish at the Puerto Rico Classic. Freshman Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) continued the Gator trend by carding an even-par 72 during his opening round. Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) recorded a 74 (+2), while senior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) carded a 76 (+4).

SEC schools dominated the first day of play at the Puerto Rico Classic by taking the top three positions on the leader board. Alabama leads the tournament with a score of 280 (-8), while No. 1 Georgia trails not far behind with a score of 281 (-7).

The Puerto Rico Classic will continue with the second round on Monday beginning at 7 a.m. (ET)
