Friday December 2, 2005Gator Women?s Swimmers Complete Day Two of U.S. Open

On day two of the U.S. Open five Gator women made an appearance in the finals competition at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center in Auburn, Ala.


Samantha Vanderbilt (Nashville, Tenn.) led the way for the UF swimmers in the 100-meter backstroke, as she posted a time of 1:05.01 to claim second-place in the B-final.  In the same event Kelsy Smith (Cary, N.C.) notched a fourth-place finish in the C-final with a time of 1:06.42.


In the 200-meter freestyle Natalie Pike (Boca Raton) posted a 2:06.29 to take fourth in the C-final of the event, while Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) claimed fifth in the B-final of the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:59.79.


The 400-meter medley relay team of Vanderbilt, Bernhardt, Mandy Huff (Gold Hill, N.C.) and Pike clocked in with a time of 4:20.51 to finish in fourth-place.


“We’re just here with a skeleton group and looking to get some good long course experience,” said head coach Gregg Troy.  “They’re starting to show the signs of wear and tear but we’ve managed to put together some good relays. We are getting a little race weary, but we’ve had a lot of good racing mid-way through the season up to this point.”


Morning Preliminary Results

In day two preliminary action, which kicked off at 9:30 a.m. Friday, five Gators competed for a berth into the evening finals in assorted events.  Vanderbilt notched a 1:05.85 in the 100-meter backstroke to finish in 16th, while Smith posted an 18th-place finish with a 1:06.17 effort. 


In the 100-meter butterfly Bernhardt clocked in at 1:04.48 to finish 22nd, while Huff claimed 34th with a time of 1:04.96.  Vanderbilt notched a 62nd-place finish in the same event with a 1:07.41 effort.


Pike recorded a time of 2:05.79 in the 200-meter freestyle to finish in 17th, and Bernhardt rounded out the prelim events for the Gators with a 5:01.84 in the 400-meter individual medley to claim 14th.


Action continues at the U.S. Open with the third and final day of competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning with preliminary heats of the 800-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter breaststroke, 200-meter butterfly and 1500-meter freestyle.  Finals of the same events are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
