Friday November 18, 2005Gator Swimming And Diving Finds Success In Day One Of Purdue Invite

The No. 7 Florida men’s swimming and diving team sits in firstf-place and the No. 4 women stand at second after day one of the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., on Friday.  The Gators claimed first in three, second in four and third in two championship finals events in the evening session.

 

In the finals of the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas), Candace Weiman (Castro Valley, Calif.), Caroline Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) and Natalie Pike (Boca Raton) notched a second place finish with a time of 1:33.25.  On the men’s side, the 200 freestyle relay team of Darian Townsend (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa), Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach), Daniel Penniman (Pensacola) and Nick Borreca (Honolulu, Hawaii) posted a time of 1:20.47 to take first-place in the championship final.

 

In the women’s 500 freestyle final Kim Larson (Longwood) took second-place in a time of 4:52.43, while Burckle notched a 4:52.82 to finish third and Kelsy Smith (Cary, N.C.) posted a 4:55.43, good enough for sixth-place.  On the men’s side Lochte captured first place in the championship final in a time of 4:21.07, while Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.) and Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished fourth and fifth in the same race with times of 4:27.54 and 4:27.83, respectively.  Kevin Nead (Itaca, N.Y.) rounded out the quartet of Gators in the championship final with an eighth-place finish in a time of 4:32.62.

 

Weiman claimed first-place for the Gator women in the finals heat of the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.53.  In the same race Pike notched a time of 2:04.09 to finish fifth and Ashley Carusone (Gainesville) claimed sixth with a 2:04.94.  On the men’s side Bradley Ally (Ft. Lauderdale) finished with a time of 1:48.62 in the finals heat of the 200 individual medley, good for third-place, while Townsend claimed fourth with a 1:49.44.

 

In the women’s 50 freestyle championship final Vollmer claimed fourth in a time of 23.44, while Borreca recorded a 20.74 on the men’s side to finish in fourth-place of the same event.

 

In diving action Alicia Miller (Hobie Sound) posted 237.40 points to finish in seventh place in the one-meter finals for the women.  Jonathan Wilcox (Bellevue, Wash.) led the Gator men’s finals duo with a second-place finish in a 330.60-point effort on the three-meter board.   Justin Schmidt (Falcon, Colo.) claimed seventh with 289.30 in the mens finals as well.

 

The 400 medley relay final saw the team of Vanderbilt, Hartley, Weiman and Vollmer notch a second-place finish in a time of 3:44.47, while Lochte, Ally, Townsend and Borrecca claimed second and posted a time of 3:16.49 for the men’s final in the same event.

 

Action resumes at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center Saturday morning with day two preliminary heats beginning at 10 a.m.  The finals will follow in the evening and are slated to begin at 6 p.m.  A recap and full results will be available at www.gatorzone.com at the conclusion of the day
