Sunday November 6, 2005M. Golf Third After Second Round At The Carpet Capital Collegiate

Dalton, Ga.

The No. 5 ranked University of Florida men’s golf team trail Georgia and Georgia State after two rounds at the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Saturday. The Gators carded a team-score of 294 on the day, to go along with yesterday’s score of 282 for a total of 576 (E).

Senior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) led the Gators with an even-par 72 at the 7,010-yard course at The Farm. Stegmaier is currently tied for 24th. Senior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) also shot a 72 (E) and is tied for sixth.

Senior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and freshman Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) remained tied for 17th place with identical scores of 70+75 = 145 (+1). Freshman Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) tied for 54th with scores of 76+75 = 151 (+7)

The Gators entered the second round with the lead, but a late charge by Georgia and Georgia State helped displace Florida from the top of the leader board. Georgia recorded scores of 289+284 = 573 (-3), while Georgia Southern finished with scores of 284+289 = 573 (-3). Florida remains two strokes ahead of Duke, who carded scores of 288+290 (+2) for fourth-place.

“We still have a chance to win the golf tournament,” Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. “There isn’t much more you can ask for at this point. There is still a lot of golf left to be played.”

The Carpet Capital Collegiate continues on Sunday morning with the third and final round. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
