Sunday October 16, 2005No. 22 Florida Soccer Falls 1-0 at Mississippi

OXFORD, Miss. -

The No. 22 University of Florida soccer team (10-4-1, 5-2-1 SEC) suffered a 1-0 loss at Southeastern Conference co-leader Mississippi (13-3, 7-1 SEC) Sunday afternoon in front of an Ole Miss Soccer Stadium crowd of 960. Tennessee and Mississippi share the lead in the SEC regular-season race.

The Rebels got the game-winning goal at 87:54 when Chrissy Strini crossed the ball into the box. Gill finished the eight-yard diagonal shot to the far post. The win was the first for Mississippi in the 11-match series.

“When you don’t finish your chances, this (the loss) happens,” UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. “We dominated a large portion of that game but if you leave a team in it, they will find a way to win it. We were not committed enough to winning this game. We weren’t committed enough to scoring. We weren’t committed enough to tackling.”

One of the Gators best scoring chances of the opening half came in the final three minutes when freshman Megan Kerns’s 25-yard shot hit the crossbar and rebounded back into the box. Jessica Young’s shot on the rebound went high.

Florida also looked to score off its sixth corner kick of the match in the 63rd minute. Melanie Booth served up the corner and Daniela Sanchez nearly put it in off her knee, but the ball went wide at the far post. The loss was the first scoreless match by the Gators this season.

Next up, the Gators return home to play host to SEC Western Division opponent LSU on Friday, Oct. 21. Match time is set for 8 p.m. (ET) at the James G. Pressly Stadium and admission is free. The match can be heard live on WRUF AM 850 and www.GatorZone.com. Live, streaming video of the match is also available – check www.GatorZone.com for full details.
