Friday September 30, 2005No. 17 Florida Soccer Drops 2-1 Match at No. 20 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -

The University of Florida soccer team (6-3-1, 1-1-1 SEC) dropped a 2-1 contest at No. 20 Tennessee (5-4-1, 3-0 SEC) Friday evening in front of a UT Soccer Complex crowd of 1,196. The score marked the sixth time in the last nine meetings between the two teams that match was decided by a 2-1 score.

The Lady Vols scored first at 66:35when sophomore Emily Redberg took the short pass from Genna Gorman and hit the eight-yard shot to the far post. Gorman added a goal of her own from six yards at 80:54 when she scored off a free kick by Kylee Rossi.

The Gators responded less than two minutes later when Cherry Pickman took a hard shot from the top of the six-yard box. Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart made the save but Lindsey DeLorenze able to put the rebound just inside the post from three-yards at 82:14. It was DeLorenze’s third goal of the season.

Florida had a couple of excellent chances in the waning minutes of the match. A shot by Melanie Booth was saved for a corner kick, but the Gators weren’t able to find the goal on the kick.

“The bottom line in that match was their ability to pressure was better than our ability to play the ball to feet, switch the ball and things like that. They put a lot of pressure on our back line early and we did not deal with it very well,” UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. “Their goals came off of throw-ins or free kicks and we’ve got to more aggressive on those situations. It was a very disjointed game – corner kicks, throw-ins – there wasn’t very much rhythm to the game. We did not do a good job handling their pressure.”

Next up, the Gators will meet Georgia in Athens, Ga., on Sunday, Oct. 2. Match time begins at 1 p.m. at the Georgia Soccer Stadium and can be heard live on the official website of the Florida Gators - www.GatorZone.com.
