No. 4 Florida used a .458 offensive effort with four players registering double-digit kills to snap the Southland Conference Champion UT-San Antonio's school record 16-match winning streak with a 15-3, 15-8, 15-3 sweep in front of 1,150 fans Saturday night at the Convocation Center.
Led by San Antonio native, setter Jen Sanchez (Providence) with a .750 hitting efficiency (6-0-8), Florida (25-2) put down 65 kills to UTSA's (22-6) 42. Junior Heather Wright (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville), who leads the nation in hitting efficiency, recorded a match-high 16 kills with only one error on 25 attempts to hit .600. Another Texas product, Nicole McCray (Longview, Texas/Pine Tree) netted a .556 hitting efficiency with 11 kills and four blocks.
Jenny Whitehead (Jenison, Mich./Jenison/Mich. State) recorded 12 kills, and Jerilyn Hattendorf (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles) tallied 10. Both led with 13 digs.
Defensively, the Gators put up nine and a half blocks to UTSA's three to hold the Roadrunners to a .175 hitting efficiency. Wright posted a match-high five blocks. Sanchez was in on four, including one solo.
Florida dominated the first frame with a .632 hitting efficiency (13-1-19) and put up six blocks to hold UTSA to -.038. It only took 14 minutes for the Gators to put away UTSA.
But, in Game 2, the Roadrunners sped up their offense and took two leads. An improved UTSA offense, which hit .221, was not enough to overcome the Gator defense. Florida stifled the Roadrunners with 13 team blocks. The Gators also hit .388 with 32 kills and only two unforced errors in the 34-minute battle.
Florida, which is on a 21-match win streak, looks to defend its SEC Tournament title in Knoxville, Tenn., beginning Nov. 19. The champion of the single-elimination bracket receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The pairings will be announced Sunday, Nov. 14.
