Friday September 23, 2005No. 6 VB Wins 15th Straight SEC Opener Vs. Miss. St.

STARKVILLE, Miss.

Jane Collymore led the Gators with 19 kills and 19 digs

Senior outside hitter Jane Collymore (Engelwood, Colo.) finished with 19 kills and 19 digs in leading No. 6 Florida to its 15th straight Southeastern Conference opening win 3-1 (27-30, 30-17, 30-19, 30-26) Friday evening at the Newell-Grissom Building.

The win was Florida’s 75th straight SEC regular season road victory and gave coach Mary Wise her 200th conference regular season win against just three losses in her 14-plus seasons. Florida (11-1, 1-0) finished with more kills (67-57), digs (84-71) and total blocks (13.0-8.0), while out-hitting Mississippi State (9-2, 0-1) .302-.174. Sophomore setter Angie McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) finished just one kill shy of the program’s first triple double with 50 assists, 10 digs and nine kills on .900 hitting.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our players,” Florida coach Mary Wise said. “To win this match with Mississippi State playing as well as they did says a lot about this team. Mississippi State is going to give a lot of teams fits this year. Jane Collymore really stepped up for us tonight. She’s a senior co-captain and she really gave us a big lift down the stretch.”

Sophomore middle blocker Kisya Killingsworth (Deltona, Fla.) also fared well for the Gators with 13 kills and seven total blocks, including four solos. Senior libero Rachel Engel (Littleton, Colo.) added 23 digs to lead all players.

Collymore moved into sixth place in school history for career kills with 1,265 after her performance, while Engel now stands in seventh place in UF history with 998. She’s just two digs shy of becoming the seventh player ever at Florida to reach 1,000 in a career.

Florida returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 25 when the Gators travel to Oxford to take on Mississippi. The contest is slated for a 2:30 p.m. (ET) start and will be broadcast live on WRUF-AM 850 and www.GatorZone.com.
