Friday November 12, 1999Men's Hoops Rolls Past California All-Stars, 84-79

Freshman forward Donnell Harvey (Shellman, Ga./ Randolph-Clay) led the eighth-ranked University of Florida men's basketball team in scoring for the second consecutive game with 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting off the bench. He helped the Gators complete their 1999 exhibition season with an 84-79 victory over the California All-Stars at the Stephen C. O'Connell on Friday evening.

With 10:50 remaining in the first half, freshman forward Matt Bonner (Concord, N.H./ Concord) broke a 21-21 tie with a three-pointer from the left side of the arc to start the Gators on an 11-0 run over the next 2:30 to give UF a lead they would not relinquish. The Gators would take a 50-36 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the All-Stars cut the lead to four (81-77) on a three-pointer from the right corner by former Gator Eddie Shannon (1995-99) with 1:35 remaining in the game. The Gators scored three of the games final five points to hold on to the five-point victory.

Sophomore center Udonis Haslem (Miami, Fla./ Miami Senior) aided the Gators with 16 points on seven-of -10 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds.

Shannon led the All-Stars in scoring with 20 points in his return to the O'Connell Center. Forward Cornelius Holden and center Mark Sanford both chipped in with 16 points apiece.

The attendance of 7,931 sets a record for an exhibition game at the O'Connell Center.

The Gators will open regular season play on Friday, Nov. 19, when they host traditional rival Florida State at the O'Connell Center. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and will be shown on the Sunshine Network.
