Friday September 16, 2005No. 16 Florida State Defeats No. 13 Florida Soccer 4-2
Gainesville, FL
The Gators got on the board
first at 12:06 when junior Melanie Booth,
running down the left side of the field, kicked the ball off a defender then
split it between two others in the box.
Booth crossed the goal with a 10-yard shot to the upper right hand
corner of the net just out of FSU goal keeper Ali Mims’ reach.
Florida State answered back
at 22:18 with a goal from sophomore Sel Kuralay. The play materialized when freshman Mami
Yamaguchi passed the ball down the left side of the field to junior India
Trotter. Trotter passed the ball across
her body to the middle of the box to Kuralay, who tapped the ball from two
yards out just past the goal line and diving UF goal keeper Jen Gardner.
Florida would not waste much
time getting back on the board as senior Rie
Sawai scored her first goal as a Gator off a cross with assists from
freshman Katie Green and senior Lindsey DeLorenze to put the Gators up
2-1 at 29:10.
An unassisted Kuralay helped
the Seminoles respond by striking her team-high ninth goal of the season and
second of the game from 25 yards out at 33:07 to neutralize the match at 2-2.
FSU’s
Kuralay attempted her third goal on an indirect free kick, an uncommon
shot. The attempt was awarded after the
referee called an unsafe play in the box, awarding the Seminoles an indirect
free kick from eight yards out. Gardner
blocked the kick and kept the game at a 2-2 stalemate.
After a Florida heading
miscue near midfield, Florida State capitalized and scored a goal to go up
3-2. The play resulted in sophomore
Holly Peltzer scoring her first career goal at 76:33 after finding herself open
in the box. Peltzer chipped the ball over Gardner’s arms and into the top left
corner of the net with Yamaguchi and junior Viola Odebrecht contributing assists.
Florida attempted to hit an
equalizer as time ran down but found themselves the victims of another goal at
86:39 from Peltzer. Freshman Katrin
Schmidt kicked the ball across her body to Peltzer who chipped it over Gardner
for her second career goal and second goal of the evening, putting FSU up 4-2.
Florida was held scoreless
in the second half.
UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh realized the tempo was
to the Gators’ disadvantage Friday evening.
“We would score, they would
answer, we would score, they would answer,” she said. “When you are trying to play a counter-attack
style, you have to take some risk.”
Nevertheless, Burleigh was
able to see some positives in UF’s loss.
“I also think that there was
some good defense during the course of this game on our part,” she said. “We
had some great offensive opportunities.
This was one of the most exciting games that I can remember being played
here.”
FSU’s four goals Friday
evening marked the most goals they have ever scored in the series, three was
the previous high. Friday evening’s
match was the first-ever regular-season win for the Seminoles in Gainesville,
Fla. They had won twice previously in
the 2000 and 2003 NCAA Tournaments.
Friday’s loss to FSU was the
final match of Florida’s three-game home stand that included two 2-0 wins
against Loyola College and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The Gators travel to Orlando to face the UCF Golden Knights on Sunday at
4 p.m. before returning home next weekend for a two-game home stand to open
Southeastern Conference play against Alabama and Auburn.
