Friday September 9, 2005No. 12 Florida Soccer Defeats Loyola College 2-0

Gainesville, FL

Two second half goals gave the No. 12 University of Florida soccer team (3-1) a 2-0 win over Loyola College (2-3) Friday evening in front of a James G. Pressly Stadium crowd of 1,723.

Junior Melanie Booth turned in her first goal of the season Friday, scoring off a corner kick. Booth headed in the kick by freshman Ameera Abdullah just inside the post at 54:30.

“I was going far post. We’ve had a lot of balls go over our heads back there so I just wanted to make sure I covered the back post,” she said. “I saw the net and it went in.”

Senior Lindsey DeLorenze scored off another long-distance shot Friday night for her second consecutive match with a goal. Her unassisted goal came from 25-yard center shot that curled under the crossbar. On Sunday at The Inn of Saint Mary’s Soccer Classic in South Bend, Ind., DeLorenze turned in her first Gator goal with a 16-yard shot.

“I’m glad I can get on the attack a lot more. When I saw the shot, I just took it,” DeLorenze said. “I’ve always been able to kick it pretty far. Usually people don’t expect it, so when I had the opportunity, I took it.”

UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh thought the team gained intensity as the match went on.

“I thought we came out a little flat.  In the first 50 minutes, we weren’t our normal selves as far as winning 50-50 balls and just having the intensity to take it to the other team,” she said. “On the brighter side, we scored two goals, hit the crossbar once, and had a shutout.”

She was happy with the play off the Gator bench.

“I think they’re in good shape (regarding the Gators’ conditioning). But what’s more important than that is when other players come in the game we maintain the same level of play as before. When we made substitutes in the first half, I felt that the level went up.  That was great, and we’re counting on the players that come off of the bench to do that,” she said. “Tonight we played probably 20 people, and there aren’t that many teams that can do that.”

Florida continues its home stand when it plays host to Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m. The first 400 fans receive an adidas hat and the Gators will participate in an autograph session following the match.
