The No. 8
University of Florida
volleyball team held its annual preseason Fan Day and Orange & Blue
Scrimmage before nearly 1,000 fans on Saturday afternoon at the Stephen C.
O'Connell Center.
The intrasquad scrimmage featured all 12 current Gator athletes
as players for the Orange team and the Blue
team. After dropping the first game, the Blue team came back to win 2-1 (27-30,
30-26, 15-12). Players switched teams
occasionally, but sophomore middle blocker Kisya
Killingsworth (Deltona, Fla.) led all players with 11 combined
kills with nine coming on the blue team. Sophomore outside hitter Marcie Hampton (Gainesville,
Fla.) tallied 10 kills, while sophomore
outside hitter Kari Klinkenborg
(Highlands Ranch, Colo.)
added nine.
"Overall,
we saw some really good things," Florida
coach Mary Wise said. "We played two and a half games and saw our players
never out of breath. Our team's in very good shape. That said,
we have some things we still need to work on - our serving, blocking,
transition defense.
"I'm
very pleased with the turnout of fans today," Wise said. "Much of our
success is due to the support we get from the Gator Nation. To get this many
fans for a scrimmage says a lot."
The first
game was tight as the teams battled back and forth with the Orange
squad holding the lead for a majority of the game. After coming back within one
at 28-27, the Orange team scored two straight
points with Klinkenborg putting the game away on a
service ace at 30-27.
Game two
was a reversal of the opening frame in which the game was tight with the blue
team maintaining a steady, but small advantage. After building a 27-21 lead,
the orange team fought back within three at 29-26, but Hampton put the game away with a kill for
Blue at 30-26.
In an
abbreviated third game to 15 points, the Blue team took control before a late
failed comeback from the Orange team ended
with a 15-12 win for Blue. Orange trailed by as
much as six at 11-5 before coming within two at 13-11 and 14-12, but senior
outside hitter Jane Collymore
(Englewood, Colo.) ended the match with a kill, her
seventh of the day.
Florida opens the 2005 season when the Gators host 2004 NCAA
participant Jacksonville
at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29 at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
