The eighth-ranked University of Florida men’s basketball team opened its 1999-2000 season with a 109-69 decision over Korabel, Ukraine in an exhibition match-up Monday night in front of a record exhibition crowd of 7,840 at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
Five Gators scored in double figures, with freshman Donnell Harvey (Shellman, Ga./Randolph-Clay) leading the way with 23 points. Freshman Brett Nelson (St. Albans, W. Va./St. Albans) finished with 16 points while sophomore Mike Miller (Mitchell S.D./Mitchell) added 14. Sophomore Teddy Dupay (Ft. Myers, Fla./Mariner) and sophomore Udonis Haslem (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) had 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The four freshmen, Harvey, Nelson, Justin Hamilton (Sarasota, Fla./Booker), and Matt Bonner (Concord, N.H./Concord) combined for 54 points and 22 of the 44 rebounds.
Head Coach Billy Donovan is unbeaten in seven exhibition games as the coach of the Gators and is a perfect 11-0 as a head coach in preseason action. The Gators have won seven consecutive exhibition games and 11 of their last 13.
The Gators will take on the California All-Stars Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in their final exhibition match-up before Florida State comes to town on Nov. 19 to open the regular season.
