Sunday May 1, 2005Softball Loses Series Finale to LSU
The No. 16 Florida Softball team (36-19, 15-12 SEC) lost the final game of its series with LSU (30-18, 12-15 SEC), 10-0, Sunday afternoon.
LSU scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Camille Harris was hit by an Amanda Knowles pitch to start the game. Lauren Castle followed with a base hit to left field. A second consecutive base hit by Stephanie Hill scored Harris from second. Leslie Klein walked to load the bases. Vanessa Soto drew another walk to score the second run of the inning. Heidi Robin, who was pinch running for Hill scored on a sacrifice fly by Quinlan Duhon to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers put up seven more runs in the top of the seventh as they batted around. They scored their runs on six hits and one Gator error.
Florida put up three hits in the game. Kristen Butler had a base hit in the first and Stacie Pestrak laid a beautiful bunt single right in front of the plate in the fifth. Nikki Baldwin had the Gators third hit, a base hit though the left side in the bottom of the seventh.
Amanda Knowles received the loss for Florida, only her second loss of the season. She is now 5-2 on the year. Emily Turner earned the win for LSU in her third appearance of the weekend. She improves to 16-12.
Florida will play its last regular season home games on Tuesday. The Gators will take on Florida State in a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. at the Florida Softball Stadium. Mary Nesbitt Wisham, the inspiration for the character Kit in the movie "A League of Their Own" will attend the game as a representative of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She will have a display of memorabilia from her time in league.
