Tuesday April 26, 2005Softball Suffers Loss to Tigers
The Florida Softball team (36-14, 15-7 SEC) suffered a 5-3 loss to Auburn (43-13, 17-7 SEC) at the Auburn Softball Complex today. All of Auburnís runs were scored off home runs.
Florida scored first in the top half of the second inning. Mandy Schuerman drew a leadoff walk. Nikki Baldwin entered the game to pinch run for her. After a Savana Kelly strikeout, Lindsay Norfleet knocked a double to the centerfield wall, allowing Baldwin to advance to third. Baladwin scored on a beautifully laid Stacie Pestrak bunt. Pestrak beat the throw to first and advanced to second on an error by the Tiger second baseman, allowing Norfleet to score and giving the Gators a 2-0 lead.
Auburn tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Sara Dean led off the inning with a single through the left side. Paige Jones followed with her tenth home run of the season to know the game at 2-2.
Florida went ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth on a solo shot by Melissa Zick that hit the scoreboard in left centerfield.
The Tigers went ahead by two runs in their half of the sixth. Sara Ghezzi led off with a base hit. Lolani Alvarez followed with a base hit to left. Ghezzi was out at third on a fielderís choice play, leaving Amy Shaw on first. The Gators got the second out of the inning, but Kristina McCain hit a three run homer out in right field to put Auburn up 5-3.
Florida tallied seven hits in the game, each hit by a different player.
Stacey Stevens received the loss for Florida to move her record to 21-9 on the year. Beth Pietro improved to 22-5 on the season with the win for Auburn.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow in a doubleheader. The first game begins at 2 p.m. Eastern.
