Saturday April 16, 2005No. 6 Men's Golf Takes the Lead at the 2005 SEC Golf Championships

Sea Island, Ga.

The No. 6 University of Florida men's golf team fired a 12-over par score of 292 to go with their opening round score of 294, to take the lead on Saturday in the 2005 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Sea Island Golf Club. The Gators own a five-stroke lead over No. 9 Auburn, who sits in second-place.

"Today was very similar to yesterday," Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "The wind was blowing pretty hard and it made the course play a little tougher. Scores again were on the high side today, but I think we're in a pretty good spot and that we have played two pretty solid rounds of golf."

Leading the Gators today was junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) as he fired an even-par score of 70 to shave five strokes off his opening round score of 75. Stegmaier was one of only three golfers that carded an even-par round on the day and by doing so moved him into a tie for seventh-place, only four strokes off Richard Scott of Georgia's one-over par individual leading total.

Junior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) continued to play consistent on the course as he recorded a three-over par score of 73 today to go with his two-over par effort from yesterday. Vargas, who has a combined score of 145, sits tied for seventh-place entering the final round.

Becoming the third UF golfer in the top-10, junior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) notched a four-over par second round total of 74 to add to his one-over par effort from Friday's opening round. Every is also tied for seventh-place with a tournament total score of 145.

Redshirt senior Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany) has shot rounds of 76 (+6) and 75 (+5) to earn a tie for 27th-place entering the final day of competition.

Sitting in a tie for 44th-place, junior Ryan Cochran (Paducah, Ky.) has recorded rounds of 76 (+6) and 80 (+10) to earn a tournament total of 156.

"We just need to focus on taking care of our own business because there is still a lot of golf to be played," Alexander said. "I think that we'll be fine if we continue to hit the ball well and if we do not give shots away in our short game."

The 2005 SEC Men's Golf Championships conclude tomorrow at the Sea Island Golf Club. The final round is slated to begin at 8 a.m. and live tournament scoring updates can be found on www.golfstat.com.
