SEA ISLAND, Ga.--
The sixth-ranked University of Florida men's golf team fired a 14-over par score of 294 to open the 2005 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships at Sea Island Golf Club. Florida currently sits in second-place, trailing No. 17 Kentucky by four strokes.
Leading the Gators was junior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.)
as he carded an opening round one-over par score of 71. Every's opening round effort placed him in a tie for fourth-place, just three shots off Georgia's Richard Scott who holds the individual lead at two-under par.
Junior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.)
turned in an opening round two-over par score of 72 to sit in a tie for eighth-place.
By carding a five-over par score of 75, junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.)
closed out the opening round by tying for 21st-place.
The duo of junior Ryan Cochran (Paducah, Ky.)
and redshirt senior Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany)
notched identical six-over par opening round scores of 76 to sit in a tie for 32nd-place.
The 2005 SEC Men's Golf Championships continue tomorrow through Sunday at the Sea Island Golf Club.
