Gainesville, FL

Melissa Zick is now on an eight-game hit streak.

The No. 13/14 Florida softball team (28-8, 7-2 SEC) suffered a tough loss to No. 11/11 Alabama (38-8, 11-4 SEC) at the Florida Softball Stadium Wednesday afternoon. This was only Florida’s second loss in conference play this season.

Florida began the bottom of the third with a single from Lauren Roussell, who was replaced with pinch runner Shelley Stevens. With two outs and Stevens on first, Lindsey Cameron hit a RBI single up the middle for the first run of the game. Cameron advanced to second on the throw home. The next batter, Melissa Zick, hit a RBI single to score Cameron and stole second while Mandy Schuerman was at bat. Schuerman struck out, stranding Zick, but the Gators ended the inning leading the Crimson Tide 2-0.

In the top of the fourth, Alabama pitcher Stephanie VanBrakle hit a single up the middle to lead off the inning; she was replaced with pinch runner Deasy Phillips. With no outs, the next batter, Dominique Accetturo hit a two-run home run to left, tying the game at 2-2. Florida pitcher Stacey Stevens finished the inning with two groundouts and a strikeout to Emily Currie.

Alabama’s bats kept swinging in the top of the fifth. Leah White led the inning off with a strongly hit single up the middle. Florida coach Karen Johns replaced starting pitcher Stevens with Mandy Schuerman. Schuerman’s first batter, Jackie Wilkins, hit a single to advance White to second. Ashley Courtney was up and hit into a fielder’s choice, sending White to third as the Gators threw out Wilkins at second. With one out and runners on first and third, Schuerman threw a wild pitch, bringing White home and putting the Crimson Tide up 3-2. Staci Ramsey was walked and Michelle Menningmann was sent in to pinch run for her. Schuerman settled down, and with runners on first and second, held Alabama to two groundouts to end the inning.

Alabama starting pitcher VanBrakle pitched a complete game victory with 11 strikeouts, improving her record to 18-4 on the season. Schuerman, who relieved St. Stevens in the fifth, received her second loss of the season and had one strikeout. St. Stevens ended the day with four strikeouts and two earned runs.

Alabama left Gainesville defeating Florida 2-1 in the three-game series. Florida will be on the road this weekend, playing another three-game series at SEC-rival and league leading Georgia beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.
