Statesboro, Ga.

The No. 10 University of Florida men's golf team carded a three-round 26-over par score of 890 to finish in 10th-place at the 2005 Chris Schenkel Invitational. The two-day event was hosted by Georgia Southern at the Forest Heights Country Club.

"We didn't do many things well this week," Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "Specifically we were awful putting the ball and when you don't putt well you're not going to play well."

Leading the Gators was junior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) as he carded rounds of 72-74-74=220 (+4) to earn his fourth top-20 finish of the season. Vargas finished the three-round event tied for 17th-place.

Rebounding from a tough first day, junior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) responded on the final day by firing a team-best one-under par final round score of 71. Every, who began the tourney by notching rounds of 78 (+6) and 74 (+2) finished with a three-round total of 223 (+7), which was good enough to tie for 30th-place.

The duo of junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) and redshirt senior Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany) finished the event tied for 36th-place as each totaled scores of 225 (+9). For Stegmaier, the 36th-place effort was his first tourney finish outside the top-20 this spring season.

Redshirt senior Duke Butler (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) recorded rounds of 77-78-77=232 (+16) to finish tied for 59th-place.

"We're going to use this break before we head to Austin to address many of the things that we need to work on to play better consistently," Alexander said.

The 10th-ranked Gators return to action on April 4-5, as they travel to Austin, Texas for the 2005 Morris Williams. The 54-hole event will be hosted by the University of Texas at the Austin Country Club.
