It only took two runs for the Florida Softball team (19-6) to go undefeated in the first day of the Long Beach State Invitational at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif. Friday evening. The Gators defeated Loyola- Marymount and Indiana each 1-0.
Florida defeated Loyola Marymount 1-0 in the first game of the day. In the top of the fifth Michelle Diaz drove a double to right field. She scored on a double by designated player Mary Ratliff for the only run of the game.
Florida pitcher Stacey Stevens improved to 9-4 on the season with the win. She went the distance, striking out 10 batters and giving up only one walk in the game.
Florida did not put its first run on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning against Indiana. With one out in the inning, Shelley Stevens dropped a base hit into shallow centerfield. She stole second. Lauren Roussell hit her home with the first triple by a Gator this season to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.
Stacey Stevens came in the game in relief of starter Amanda Knowles with one out in the fifth inning to earn the win. Knowles struck out seven before she came out of the game. Stevens struck out four to earn the win and improve her record to 10-4 on the year.
The Gators will play their final two games in the tournament on Saturday, facing San Diego State and host Long Beach State.
