Lindsey Cameron went 5-for-7 with three home runs in the first two games of the GRU Classic.

The Florida Softball team (9-0) won their first two games at home this season, defeating Notre Dame, 3-2, and Coastal Carolina, 7-2 in the GRU Classic on Friday. Lindsey Cameron came up big for the Gators with a 5-for-7 performance with five RBI and three runs scored.

Florida pulled off a come-from-behind win for the second time this season to defeat Notre Dame 3-2 in the first game of the day. Cameron led the team with a 2-for-3 performance, both hits home runs.

Notre Dame scored first in the top of the fourth inning. Megan Ciolli left off the inning with a base hit through the left side. Meagan Ruthrauff followed with a RBI double to score Ciolli, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch her hit to a triple. The Gator defense retired the final two batters of the inning.

The Gators tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Lindsey Cameron two-out, solo home run over the left centerfield fence. The Gators went up 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a second Cameron two-out solo home run. This time seep over the centerfield. It marked the second time in her career Cameron hit two home runs in a game. She also had two home runs at Kentucky on March 8, 2003. She is now the only player in school history to hit two home runs in a game twice in her career.

The Irish tied the game in the top of the seventh. Ruthrauff led off the inning with a base hit to centerfield. Nicole Wicks came in to pinch run for her at first. Wicks advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mallorie Lenn and to third on a Liz Hartmann ground out to Lindsey Norfleet at second. She scored on a Florida error while Carrie Wisen was safe at first. The Gators took care of business and got the next batter out to end the half inning.

Lauren Roussell led off the Gator half of the seventh with a walk. Nikki Baldwin singled through the left side to put runners at first and second. Both runners advanced on a Michelle Diaz sacrifice bunt. Notre Dame made a pitching change as Heather Booth came in for starter Steffany Stenglein. It made no difference to the Gators though as Norfleet hit a walk-off base hit to score Roussell from third for the 3-2 Florida victory.

Stacey Stevens improved her record to 4-0 with the win. She struck out five and allowed no walks in the complete game.

Florida had an easier time in game two. Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the third when Florida put four runs on the board. Norfleet extended her hit streak to seven games with a base hit through the left side. Shelley Stevens followed with a base hit up the middle. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice hit by Stacie Pestrak, her fifth of the season. Norfleet scored as Melissa Zick was safe at first on an error by the Chanticleers’ first base person. Cameron scored both Stevens and Zick with a two-RBI base hit, but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double.

The Gators added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Shelley Stevens singled up the middle. Pestrak followed with a base hit to right field, allowing Stevens to advance to third. Stevens scored on a Melissa Zick base hit. An error by the Coastal Carolina catcher allowed Pestrak to score and Zick to advance to third. Zick scored as the umpire gave her an extra base on an obstruction call against the Chanticleer short stop. Danyelle Gerts came in to relieve starting pitcher Brittany Nelson and gave up a solo homer to Cameron, her third of the day, giving Florida a 7-0 lead.

Coastal Carolina scored their two runs on a two-run homer by pinch hitter Ashley Gerdts in the bottom of the seventh.

Amanda Knowles improved to 3-0 with a complete game, eight-strikeout performance for Florida.
