Gainesville, FL

Junior Brett Stegmaier is tied for the lead at the SunTrust Gator Invitational

The No. 18 University of Florida menís golf team carded a second-round score of 291 and moved into a tie for second-place as the first day of competition at the 28th Annual SunTrust Gator Invitational came to a close. Wake Forest leads the 15-team field by a stroke with Florida and UAB tied for second.

In the afternoon session the 6,701-yard course turned into a nightmare for many players as only one player was able to record a score below 70. Unlike the first round where four players were able to shoot rounds below the par of 70 and four other players managed to break even, the second round allowed only six golfers of 78 golfers to shoot par or better.

Florida junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn,) matched the tournament low round of 68 in the second round to go with his two-over par score of 72 from the first round. By firing the best round of the afternoon, Stegmaier moved into a tie for the tournament lead with an even par score of 140. It marks the second time this season that a Gator golfer has had a share of the lead entering the final round of play.

By recording a two-over par score of 72 in the second round, junior James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) remains two strokes off the pace of Stegmaier and LSUís Heath West. With a two-round total of 142, Vargas is tied for eighth.

Tied for 29th-place, redshirt senior transfer Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany) notched rounds of 72 and 76 to sit eight strokes off the lead at 148.

Competing as an individual redshirt freshman Manuel Villegas (Medelin, Colombia), is tied with Tries at 148 as he fired rounds of 77 and 71.

Junior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) carded a first round score of 73 and added a six-over par 76 in the second to sit in a tie for 36th-place with a score of 149.

Ryan Cochran (Paducah, Ky.) improved five strokes from his first round score of 80 to earn a tournament total score of 155 and be tied for 66th-position.

The final round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational is scheduled to begin with the first group teeing off at 8 a.m. Complete results and daily recaps of the tournament can be found at www.gatorzone.com.
