Senior Steve Friedlander led the Gators to one-of-two event sweeps

The No. 2 University of Florida men's swimming and diving team defeated the 15th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday afternoon at the Stephen C. Connell Center's Natatorium by a score of 143-93.

With the win the Gators improve to 11-1 overall, including a mark of 4-1 in Southeastern Conference dual meets, while the Vols drop to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the SEC.

By earning their 11th dual meet victory this season, the Gators recorded their most dual meet victories in a single season since the 1962 season when Florida posted a record of 13-1. Also the 11 wins marks a new single-season best for Head Coach Gregg Troy and makes it the fifth straight season that Florida has won at least nine dual meets.

On senior day, the Gators picked up eight event wins from eight different student-athletes and two NCAA provisional times en route to their seventh dual meet win over a ranked opponent this season.

In the 1000-yard freestyle the trio of Steve Friedlander (Coral Springs, Fla.), Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) and Max Jaben (Overland Park, Kansas) claimed the first of two Florida sweeps by racing to the top-three spots in times of 9:14.74, 9:19.35 and 9:32.33 respectively.

Earning the only other Gator sweep of the first three places was the group of Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.), Dustin McLarty (Deland, Fla.) and Matt Coan (Plantation, Fla.). The trio posted times of 4:28.48, 4:31.49 and 4:31.55 in the 500-yard freestyle to claim first through third places.

The tandem of Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) registered the only NCAA provisional times on the afternoon as the duo took first and second-place in the 200-yard freestyle in times of 1:38.50 and 1:38.61 respectively.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Florida added another one-two punch as Daniel Penniman (Pensacola, Fla.) and Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) teamed up to take first and second-place in times of 20.73 and 20.96 seconds.

On the three-meter springboard, Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) and Justin Schmidt (Falcon, Colo.) led the Florida charge by diving to first and second-place scores of 360.45 and 326.40. Wilcox and Vitor Assuncao (Orlando, Fla.) placed second and third with scores of 322.95 and 306.45 in the one-meter springboard event.

Seniors Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) and Friedlander posted times of 1:50.31 and 1:51.15 to place first and second in the 200-yard butterfly. Similar to the butterfly, the duo of Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Cory Welch (Larksville, Pa.) raced to first and second-place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke by touching the wall in times of 2:03.62 and 2:06.51.

Claiming first and third place in the 200-yard backstroke was Andrew Greener (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Justin Zumsteg (Rochester, Mich.) in times of 1:47.85 and 1:50.62 respectively.

Junior Nick Borreca (Honolulu, Hawaii) earned two second-place finishes by racing to times of 1:51.82 and 45.46 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle event.

The second-ranked Gators will close their regular season as they host Indian River Community College on Saturday, February 5. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
