Senior Maureen Farrell finshed first for UF in the women's 500-yard freestyle event.

The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed day-one of play at the Georgia Tech Invitational, with the Florida men's team leading by 35 points and the women's team by 17. Runners-up in the competition are the North Carolina State men's team with 263 points and the Tennessee women's team with 250 on the board. The meet will resume tomorrow as another full day of events kicks off.

Leading off for the men's team, freshman Grant Johnson (Clearwater) clocked 4:29.87, taking second place in the 'A' heat of the 500-yard freestyle. Behind him, freshman Chris Bernard (Weston) swam 4:31.95 for fifth-place in the 'A' heat. Finishing first in the final 'B' heat was sophomore Andrew Swenson (Daytona Beach) with a 4:33.47 effort for UF.

Swimming the men's 200 IM in the final 'A' heat was sophomore Robert Fischetti (Richmond, Va.), touching the wall in 1:51.00 for the top time in the event. In fourth in the same heat with a time of 1:53.35 was sophomore Scott Mullervy (Hightstown, N.J.). With the second fastest time in the 'B' heat, senior Will Ratliff (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) finished with a 1:56.40 200 IM effort.

In the men's 50 free, Daniel Penniman (Pensacola) finished sixth in the fastest heat with a time of 21.04. Clocking 21.53 in the 'B' heat was Andrew Greener (Delray Beach) for UF, a time good for a fourth-place heat finish. On the one-meter board for UF, diver Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) finished in eighth with 293.40 points garnered in his performance.

The men's 200-free relay team of Penniman, Johnson, Ratliff and Greener finished fourth in the competition with a team tally of 1:24.80. The squad finished just in front of the 'B' team (Swenson, Bernard, Elliot Meena (Orlando) and Tim Hughes (Winter Park)), who clocked the race in 1:27.15. In the men's 400-medley relay, the 'A' team of Greener, Ratliff, Hughes and Penniman took second (3:24.06), while the 'B' team of Johnson, Fischetti, Meena and Bernard clocked 3:25.85 for third.

For the women's team, Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) took the top time in the 500 free with her 4:48.72 effort, good for a provisional qualifying time. In the same heat, Jamie Tannhauser (Seattle, Wash.) finished in third (4:53.68) with a NCAA provisional time as well. Taking the top time in the 'B' heat was Laurie Moreau (Largo) with a 500-free time of 4:58.35, just in front of teammate Kristin Gilliam (Gainesville) who clocked the race in 5:00.32.

In the women's 200 IM, senior Katie Kennedy (Ft. Myers) finished third in the fast heat (2:06.99), while Danielle Duncan (Overland Park, Kan.) took the fastest time in the 'B' heat with a 2:06.90 effort. Mandy Huff (Gold Hill, N.C.) was just behind Duncan, touching the wall in 2:08.26.

In the women's 50 free, senior Christine Woodruff (Orlando) was the lone swimmer for UF and took second in the first heat with her time of 23.85. On the boards for UF, junior Jessica Ranieri (Huntington Valley, Pa.) finished third with 463.50 points, while senior Nicole Bolt (Orlando) took home fifth place with 453.00 points.

In the women's 400-medley relay, a team of Farrell, Huff, Colleen Healy (Cape Coral) and Woodruff finished the race in second place with a 3:50.31 combined effort. In the 200-free relay, the UF 'A' team finished second as well. The team of Farrell, Samantha Vanderbilt (Nashville, Tenn.), Woodruff and Gilliam combined for a total clocking of 1:35.97, just 1.72 seconds behind the Tennesse 'A' squad, who set a new record at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center.
