Gainesville, FL

The Florida baseball team used five pitchers to shutout Stetson over eight innings and defeat the Hatters 7-1 at McKethan Stadium Wednesday night before a crowd of 1,704.
  • Starter Alex Hart (2-2) started and went 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks. Sergio Rodriguez, scheduled to start Saturday, relieved Hart and threw one-hit ball over 2 2/3 innings. Jay Belflower pitched a perfect seventh to hold Stetson (21-23).

While Florida’s hurlers tried to out-perform one another, the familiar bats of Greg Catalanotte and Mark Ellis led the offense. Catalanotte put Florida on the scoreboard in the first with a RBI double off Jeff House (3-6) to score Ellis.

Ellis started the Gators’ rally in the third with a leadoff single. He stole second, and after a walk to Matt Siegel, scored on a RBI single by Peter Nystrom. Florida added a run in the fourth behind Ellis’ swift feet. With two outs, Ellis singled. He then stole second and third and scored when Stetson catcher Frank Corr threw wild to third.

Florida (25-17) scored another run in the sixth when Mike Floyd doubled home Kurt Keene. UF put the game out of reach in the seventh after Taylor Wood reached on an error by Stetson’s Lee Bagley and Ellis singled him home. After hits by Siegel and Catalanotte loaded the bases, Keene hit a sacrifice fly to put Florida up 7-0.

Ben Grezlovski retired the side in the eighth inning, but Stetson avoided being the first team shutout by Florida since 1996 by scoring a run in the ninth off Keith Brice.

The Gators host South Carolina in a crucial SEC series this weekend. Florida trails the Gamecocks by four games in the SEC’s Eastern Division. Jeff Cardozo (2-1, 4.97 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at McKethan Stadium.
