Junior outside hitter Jane Collymore (Englewood, Colo.) notched her sixth straight double-double, while freshman outside hitter Marcie Hampton (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior setter Lauren Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) both added double-doubles as No. 4 Florida defeated intrastate rival Florida State for the 13th consecutive time 3-1 (27-30, 30-16, 20-23, 30-18) Tuesday evening at Tully Gym.
For the Gators, it was also their 27th straight win against teams from the state of Florida, while head coach Mary Wise improved to 63-2 all-time against teams from the state. The Gators finished with more kills (52-49) assists (48-45) digs (78-64) and blocks (10.5-9.0) while out-hitting FSU .146-0.88.
"We're a team that is continuing to learn and grow," Wise said. "We played in the national championship match last year, so we're going to get the best shot from other teams every time we play and we need to learn how to deal with that. But tonight we played well enough to win in a tough environment."
Collymore finished with 18 kills and 13 digs in posting her 12th consecutive match with double figures in kills. Hampton added 14 kills and 10 digs, while Moscovic finished with 23 assists and 14 digs. Junior libero Rachel Engel (Littleton, Colo.) finished with 17 digs - her fifth straight match in double figures - while sophomore defensive specialist Rhian Davis (Austin, Texas) added 12 digs.
Florida returns to action this weekend and will host the Hilton Volleyball Classic at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Friday and Saturday. UConn will face UC-Santa Barbara in the opening match Friday at 5 p.m. before the Gators take on Clemson at 7 p.m. Florida will then play at 5 p.m. Saturday with another match at 7 p.m. Friday's match will be broadcast live on WRUF-AM 850, while Saturday's match will be webcast onwww.GatorZone.com
