Sunday September 12, 2004No. 11 UF Soccer & Missouri Tie 2-2

COLUMBIA, Mo. -

Chrstine Johnson scored the tying goal for UF in Sunday's 2-2 tie at Missouri.

No. 11 Gator soccer team (4-1-1, 0-0 SEC) and Missouri (2-3-1) tied 2-2 Sunday afternoon in front of an Audrey J. Walton Soccer Complex crowd of 426.

The Gators scored their earliest goal of the season at 3:41 when Melanie Booth sent the ball to the middle of the field where Christine Johnson back-heeled the ball to the weak side. Stephanie Freeman caught up the ball and fired an 18-yard shot to the upper slot of the goal to extend her UF season goal lead to six.

The Tigers took advantage of a Gator defensive miscue to tie the match at 30:58. At the edge of the box, Monica Hoyles tried to head the ball to UF goalkeeper Brittni Goodwin, but didn’t get quite enough on the ball. MU freshman Jenna Lind intercepted the ball and chipped it into the goal.

Missouri took the lead at 52:10 when Jennifer Nobis hit a 12-yard shot to the upper corner of the goal. The Gators, needing a goal, got one off the set play at 70:06. Ashley Kellgren served the corner and KeLeigh Hudson took the shot. The deflection came to the far post where Christine Johnson put in the tying goal.

"We were excited to get that second goal," Johnson said. "We picked it up (in the second half). We realized that we needed to make up for the first half – pressuring high and playing more direct. Once we got the equalizer, we tried to keep the momentum going."

The match was a physical battle, with the teams totaling 47 fouls (27 UF, 20 MU). The Gators outshot the Tigers 17-13, which includes an 11-4 advantage in the second half. Goodwin turned in four saves Sunday, while MU’s Laura Buehring posted eight.

"This is a frustrating loss because we squandered the first half," Burleigh said. "In the second half, we decide to make a game of it, but it wasn’t enough. Our leadership has to step it up to find a way for us to get mentally prepared for the first half, especially on a Sunday."

The Gators return home next weekend to play host to the final weekend of non-conference play. Florida opens the weekend on Sept. 17 with Rutgers. Match time is set for 8 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium and admission is free. The match can be heard live on www.GatorZone.com and is also available on GatorVision.
