Friday September 3, 2004No. 1 UNC Soccer Defeats No. 12 Florida 3-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The No. 12 University of Florida soccer team (2-1, 0-0 SEC) lost 3-0 to No. 1 North Carolina (3-0, 0-0 ACC) Friday evening in front of a Fetzer Field crowd of 3,825. The match was the first meeting between the two teams since the 1998 NCAA Championship final, which UF won 1-0.

Those that were still seeking a parking spot would have missed the first goal of the match. UNC’s two Olympians tried to hook up for a score as Lindsay Tarpley crossed the ball into the box looking for Heather O’Reilly. But the attempt by Monica Hoyles to clear the ball ended up in the Gator goal after just 27 seconds of play. It was the first UF own goal since Oct. 2, 2001 at Connecticut. .

The Tar Heels also scored late in the opening half. Kendall Fletcher found Lori Chalupny open and her 28-yard shot found the net at 42:43. UNC finished its scoring at 71:04 when Jamie Gilbert’s shot rebounded off UF goalkeeper Brittni Goodwin and O’Reilly put in the deflection.

The Gators had some good looks at the goal, with one of the best coming in the 64th minute when Melanie Booth brought the ball down left side and sent a beautiful cross into the box, but it was just out of the reach of an on-rushing Ashley Kellgren. Later in the half, Stephanie Freeman found some room on the right side of the box. She centered the ball and Cherry Pickman got her right foot on the ball, but UNC’s Aly Winget made the save.

Despite the loss, UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh saw some good characteristics in this young Gator team.

"Overall as a team, I like our character, I like our attacking mentality. I’m just disappointed with the goals we gave up. We gave up goals when we knew they were most dangerous – first five, last five and then a rebound goal," Burleigh said. "We’ll have to look at the tape tonight, ,but I thought the run of play was pretty good, pretty even."

The Gators return to action on Sunday, Sept. 5 when they meet No. 18 Duke. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The match can be heard live on www.GatorZone.com.
