Sunday June 6, 2004Baseball Heads to Super Regional After 11-0 Win Over UCLA

Oklahoma City, Okla.

Tommy Boss pitched a complete game shutout in the regional championship victory.

For the first time in the history of the University of Florida baseball program the Gators will advance to Super Regional after a 11-0 victory over UCLA on Sunday. Florida improved to 43-20 as the Gators swept the three games in the regional. UF would ride the pitching of Tommy Boss as the junior pitched the complete game shutout in improving to 4-5 on the season.

Florida will head to Coral Gables, Fla. and play Miami next Saturday, Sunday, and Monday in a best of three series with the Hurricanes in Super Regional action. The Hurricanes won all three games at the Coral Gables Regional to claim the berth in the final 16.

The Gators were never threatened in the regional championship victory, as the UF offense would punish five UCLA pitchers for 11 hits including five for extra bases. Bruin starter Daniel Miltenberger would not make it out of the second inning as the right hander was knocked around for four hits and four runs in dropping to 3-2 on the season. He came out with two runners on and no outs in the second inning.

Boss would face just one batter over the minimum through four innings as he cruised with the big lead. He gave up just three hits and did not walk a batter while striking out six. He faced just 30 batters (three over the minimum) and threw 94 pitches in the win. Only one UCLA base runner would reach second as Boss got 12 fly ball outs and nine ground outs to go along with the career best six strikeouts.

Ben Harrison and Jonathan Tucker would provide the big bats as Harrison went 2-for-5 with three RBI and Tucker was 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Florida would get all the runs it needed for Boss in the first two innings. After scoring one in the first the Gators sent 11 batters to the plate in the second and scored seven runs on four hits. Florida would continue to expand the lead with a single run in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

In the first Harrison doubled to left center gap driving home Stephen Barton who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

UF then exploded for the seven runs in the second as UCLA used three different pitchers in the inning. The first six hitters reached as Adam Davis led off the inning with a single and Matt LaPorta walked. Justin Tordi picked up RBI with his shot up the middle. Florida quickly loaded the bases as ninth hitter Brian Leclerc was hit by a pitch. Jonathan Tucker drew the bases loaded walk and Stephen Barton got hit by a pitch on a 3-2 count to make the score 4-0. After the first out of the inning Harrison would step into the box and hit a shot up the middle, which plated Tucker and Leclerc. Jeff Corsaletti continued to stay hot as he tripled to the deepest part of the park in left center. That hit brought home Barton and Harrison and capped off the seven run inning and 8-0 Florida lead.

After walking with one out in the fifth. Tordi would score a second time as Leclerc doubled down the right field line and Tucker picked up the RBI with a shot to center. The Gators would close out their scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh. LaPorta doubled home Davis and Tucker picked up his third RBI with a fielder’s choice groundout.

Florida and Miami will now play for the second time this season as the Hurricanes took two out of three games in the regular season meeting in February.
