The Florida softball team (31-5, 8-3 SEC) sealed their fourth Southeastern Conference series win with a doubleheader sweep of Ole Miss (8-21, 3-5 SEC) in Oxford on Saturday. Florida won the first game 4-1 and shutout the Rebels 3-0 in game two.

Florida took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one. Jenilee Garner led off the inning with a walk from Ole Miss pitcher Mary Jane Callahan. She immediately stole second. With one out Melissa Zick just beat out an infield base hit at first and Garner advanced to third. Zick stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Florida. Garner crossed the plate on a passed ball with two outs for Florida’s first run.

Florida was able to add three more tuns in the top of the sixth inning. Garner once again led off this inning, this time reaching on an error. She stole second for the second time in the game. With one out, Zick reached first on an error and Garner moved to third to put runners on the corners. Mylin Prieto hit a base hit through the right side to score Garner from third to go up 2-0. Jenny Gladding grabbed a hit through the right side to score Zick and Prieto, giving Florida a 4-0 lead.

Ole Miss came back to score their run in the bottom of the same frame. Rebecca McIntire led off the inning with a walk. She advanced to second on a Brittany Warner ground out to second base. McIntire advanced to third on a wild pitch. Britt Hardy hit a single to score McIntire from third to reduce Florida’s lead to 4-1. The Rebels were not able to get anything else done and the Gators got the win.

Stacey Stevens earned the win for Florida, improving her record to 10-1 on the season. Callahan took the loss. Her record moves to 7-9.

The Gators went ahead in the top of the third frame in game two. Ashlie Goble led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Nikki Baldwin came in to pinch run for her. Garner reached on an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt to score Baldwin from second and put Florida ahead 1-0.

With two outs in the fifth, Prieto walked and immediately stole second. Zick hit her home with a RBI double to right center to give the Gators the 2-0 lift.

Going with the theme of scoring in the odd innings, the Gators added their final run in the top of the seventh. Goble led off the inning being hit by a Tara Willit pitch. She advanced to second on a Garner base hit to the short stop. Both runners advanced on a Prieto sacrifice bunt. Goble scored on a Zick base hit for Florida’s 3-0 lead.

The Florida defense only allowed one base runner past second base in the game. Jenny Gladding struck out 13 batters in the win. It was her 12th double digit strikeout game of the season. Her record improves to 16-3. Dana Brill got the loss for Ole Miss. Her record is now 1-9.

Zick paced the Gator offense, going 4-for-7 with three RBI on the day. Prieto also had a great day going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, including the game winning RBI in game one.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
