Sunday October 3, 1999Volleyball Sweeps Ole Miss
No. 4 Florida had three players hit above a .450 clip as it recorded its fifth straight sweep, defeating Ole Miss 15-9, 15-4, 15-1 at the Women's Multi-Sport Complex in only one hour and seven minutes Sunday afternoon to remain undefeated in the Southeastern Conference.
The Gators (13-2, 4-0 SEC) improved their all-time series lead to 13-0 under Coach Mary Wise and 19-3 overall. It was the fifth consecutive sweep of the Lady Rebels (7-7, 0-3 SEC) since 1994.
Junior middle blocker Heather Wright (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) had a season-high hitting performance for the second straight match, netting a .750 efficiency with a match-high nine kills and no errors on 12 attempts. Jenny Whitehead (Jenison, Michigan/Jenison/Michigan State) and Niki Hartley (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) were also main contributors to the team's .370 offensive effort. Whitehead committed only one error while putting down nine kills on 15 attempts to hit a season-high .533. Hartley careered for the second consecutive match with seven kills. The sophomore only had two errors on 11 attempts for a season-high .455 percentage.
Ole Miss battled Florida early and took senior All-America Jenny Manz (Orange Park, Fla./Middleburg) out of the offensive equation. The Rebels held the right side hitter to a -.142 hitting efficiency (2-3-7) and forced one error. But two other Gator weapons, Wright and Whitehead combined for 11 kills with no errors on 18 attempts. As a team, Florida hit .350, compared to Ole Miss' .111.
Florida grinded out nine unanswered points in the second frame before the Rebels got on the board with help from the only three Gator hitting errors of the game. A 3-0 Florida blocking advantage complimented its improved offensive numbers. The Gators hit .400 while holding the Rebels to a -.043 efficiency.
The Rebels barely got a hand in the third game, allowing the Gators to score 12 unanswered points. A kill off of a Gator block scored Ole Miss' only point. Florida registered six blocks to check the Ole Miss offense at a -.138 clip while hitting .389 on the game.
Lady Rebel Lauren Dorcheus led her team's attack with a match-high .714 hitting efficiency. The senior middle blocker recorded five kills with no errors on seven attempts. The team finished with a -.025 hitting percentage.
The Gators continue league action in the tail end of a season-long, five-match road swing at Auburn Friday, Oct. 8. WRUF-AM 850 will broadcast the match live from the Tigers' Student Activities Center at 8 p.m.
