Saturday March 20, 2004W. Swimming 4th at NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas

Led by solid performances by sophomore Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) and senior Sara McLarty (DeLand, Fla.), the Florida Gators finished in fourth place with 253 points at the 2004 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

“I’m really proud of our athletes,” Florida swimming head coach Gregg Troy said. “It wasn’t easy. It was really tight against some really great teams. I’m really proud of our seniors. We have four seniors, who when they first came to Florida in 2000, finished 19th at NCAAs, the lowest finish since I’ve been here. I’m really proud of those four girls for doing so well during their time at Florida.”

Florida’s fourth-place finish is the highest finish under Troy and the highest UF finish since taking third in 1994.

“I couldn’t ask for a better group of women to be on the team with me,” McLarty said. “To have this finish finally come my fourth year, I’m speechless.”

In addition to setting school records in 12 events, Florida picked up 33 All-America honors, the second-most honors under Troy (the most is 34 in 2003).

Bernhardt finished third in the 200-meter breaststroke with a school- record time of 2:23.69. Bernhardt’s time also is the 10th-fastest time in the world this year.

McLarty finished fourth in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 16:01.26, the fourth-fastest time in the world this year. McLarty’s time was faster than the previous NCAA record of 16:03.59, however Southern California’s Kalyn Keller broke the NCAA and American Record (15:49.14).

Junior Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) touched the wall in 2:08.65 in the 200-meter backstroke, breaking the school record that freshman Leah Retrum (Columbus, Ind.) set Saturday morning in prelims (2:08.72). Retrum finished seventh with a time of 2:09.34.

The relay team of senior Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland), Farrell, sophomore Mary Uhle (Sankt Ingbert, Germany) and senior Jaime Ellis (Spring, Texas) finished sixth in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 3:41.91.
