Fullerton, CA

Lindsay Norfleet was 1-for-1 with two walks and the game-winning run vs. Cal State Fullerton.

The University of Florida softball team (21-3) recorded the programís 300th win with a 9-4 victory over Michigan State Thursday in Fullerton, Calif. Unlike the game with Michigan State earlier this season, both teams hit the ball well, as the game was more of an offensive game than a pitching duel.

The Gators used four hits and capitalized on two Spartan miscues to score five runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Lindsay Cameron led off the inning with a base hit, but was thrown out stretching it to a double. Mandy Schuerman followed with a walk. After the second out, Lauren Roussell was safe on an error by the Michigan State shortstop and Schuerman advanced to third. Nikki Baldwin came in to pinch run for Roussell. As Baldwin was attempting to steal second the Spartan catcher launched the ball into centerfield, allowing Schuerman to score from third. Mylin Prieto drove a base hit down the left field line to score Baldwin. Prieto scored on a Jenny Gladding RBI double. Stacy Rosen came in to pinch run for Gladding at second. Melissa Zick drove a home run straight over the centerfield fence to give Florida the 5-0 lead.

Michigan State answered back in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Janette Hurtado drew the lead off walk to start the inning. With two outs, and runners on second and third, Jessica Beach hit a single down the left line to score Hurtado. The Gators prevented a second out from scoring as Cameron threw a strike from left field to throw Nicole Mercado out at home. Natalie Furrow led off the fifth inning with a double down the left field line. Amanda Moore came into the game to relieve starter Stacey Stevens. Furrow scored on a Brittney Green RBI double up the middle to make the score 5-2 in favor of Florida.

The Gators added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. California native, Roussell drew the lead off walk. She advances to third on a two out base hit by Zick. Jenilee Garner drove a two RBI double down the left field line to put Florida up 7-2.

The Spartans attempted a come back again in the top of the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Mercado hit a single down the left field line. Beech followed with a second single and advanced to second on the throw as the Gators attempted to throw Mercado out at third. Furrow used a third consecutive two-out base hit to score two more runs for the Spartans. Florida was able to get the last out to hold the score at 7-4.

Florida added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kristen Butler was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Cameron followed with a base hit. Schuerman was safe at first on a fielderís choice as Butler was thrown out at third for the first out of the inning. After a Lindsay Norfleet pop up, Roussell drew the two-out walk to load the bases. Prieto reached as the ball went right through the Spartan short stopís legs, allowing Schuerman and Cameron to score and put Florida up 9-4.

Zick was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle for Florida. She was 3-for-3 on the day, scored two runs and had two RBI. Cameron was also perfect for the day, going 2-for-2 win a run scored.

Stacey Stevens picked up the win for Florida in four innings of work. Her record improves to 7-1 on the season. Amanda Moore pitched three innings of relief, giving up only four hits and striking out one in that time.

Florida now has a 300-197 record in the eight-year history of the program for a .604 winning percentage. The Gators will play the 500th game in school history Friday in the second game of a double header at Cal State Northridge.

The Gators continue their California road stand late Thursday night as they face Cal State Fullerton at 10 p.m. Eastern. Friday they travel to Northridge for a double header with Cal State Northridge beginning at 4 p.m. ET.
