T&F Prepares for NCAA Indoor Championship
The second-ranked University of Florida women's track and field team and the fourth-ranked Gator men's track and field team will begin competition Friday at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Both teams hope to continue the momentum of winning the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championship two weeks ago.
The Florida men's team is traveling 16 athletes to the NCAA Championships this week - one of the biggest squads in school history. After winning the SEC Indoor Championships two weeks ago, the Gators look to add to that with a strong showing at the NCAA Championships. Entering the meet, Josh Walker is second in the 60m hurdles, Kyle Farmer is third in the 200m dash, Joe Squittieri is fourth in the high jump and Mike Morrison is fifth in the high jump.
The Gator women's track and field team will travel 13 athletes to the NCAA Championships this week, including national champion Candice Scott, SEC Champions Kim Barrett, Karen Freberg and Rachel Longfors and school-record holder Novlene Williams. After finishing third in 2002 and second in 2003, Florida looks to continue the upward trend and bring home the school's first NCAA Indoor Championship since 1992. Entering the meet, Candice Scott is first the weight throw, Kim Barrett in second in both the weight and the shot put, Williams is third in the 400m dash, the 4x400m relay is third and LaQuanda Cotten is fourth in the weight throw.
The meet begins Friday at 10 a.m. EST with the Florida women beginning at 1 p.m. EST with the weight throw. The Gator men's first event is the high jump at 3:30 p.m. EST. Action will continue through Saturday night.
