T&F Qualifies More Athletes at Fast Times Invite

In their final opportunity to qualify for next week's NCAA Indoor Championships, both the Florida men's and women's track and field teams improved or added qualifiers at the Fast Times Qualifier Saturday in Gainesville.

In one of the biggest highlights of the day, Antonio Emperator improved his provisional mark in the weight throw, winning the event with a mark of 20.86m/68-5.25. With that mark, Emperator also re-set his own school record by one and a half feet. Reggie Witherspoon also claimed a win Saturday, winning the 400m dash in 46.98.

Another big highlight for the men's team was the final event of the day. The Gators, who had already provisionally qualified in the distance medley relay, were looking for an automatic time to guarantee a spot in the championships. In a solo effort, the Gators clocked the fourth-best time in school history to automatically qualify, finishing in 9:37.11.

Dwight Ruff improved his qualifying time in the 55m hurdles, finishing second in the finals of the event in 7.28. Ahmad Jasmine clocked a provisional time in the 200m dash, finishing third in 21.49, and Sekou Clarke bettered his provisional mark by finishing fourth in 47.33.

Alex Harris improved his provisional mark in the long jump, finishing third in 7.58m/24-10.50. Jasmine also finished fourth in the 55m dash, clocking in at 6.32 in the finals. In the 55m hurdles, Kerron Clement finished sixth in 7.36, and Rickey Harris finished seventh in 7.37.

In other field events for the men, Ryan McIntyre finished fifth in the shot put (17.54m/57-6.50), and Chip Heuser finished second in the pole vault after clearing 5.21m/17-1.00. Condron finished third after clearing the same bar.

In the women's weight throw, Karen Freberg improved her automatic qualifying mark to 20.12m/66-00.25 with a sixth-place finish, while Scarlett Ekeroma provisionally qualified with a 10th-place mark of 19.14m/62-9.50. Kim Barrett finished second in the event (22.11m/72-6.50), followed by LaQuanda Cotten in third (21.27m/69-9.50) and Jukina Dickerson in fourth (20.92m/68-7.75). Rachel Longfors placed seventh with a mark of 19.88m/65-2.75 to round out the top 10.

In the 55m hurdles, Andrea Bliss automatically qualified with a time of 7.57 in the preliminaries of the event.

LaQuanda Cotten placed third in the shot put with a mark of 15.72m/51-7.00, while Akera Lathan finished seventh (14.72m/48-03.50) and Ekeroma finished ninth (13.77m/45-02.25). Christina Regan finished tied for fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.65m/5-5.00, while Carly Brown finished sixth after clearing the same height.

Florida will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., this week for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Athletes accepted to the meet will be released early this week.
