Saturday February 28, 2004Softball Undefeated in Home Tournament with 5-0 Win
The Florida softball team (16-2) continued undefeated in the Cox Communications Classic with a 5-0 shut out of Western Michigan. Florida tallied eight hits in the game and Gator ace Jenny Gladding pitched a one-hitter with 11 strike outs.
Florida scored first in the top of the second frame. With two outs, Lacy Howard singled to second base and Jenny Gladding drove her home with long ball over the fence in right center field fence.
The Gators added another run in the fourth. Cameron led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a Melissa Zick sacrifice. Nikki Baldwin came into to pinch run for her and scored on a Lindsay Norfleet base hit.
Florida added its final two runs in the top of the final inning. With one out, Mandy Schuerman hit a triple down the left field line. Mylin Prieto drew the two-out walk. Cameron hit a triple to the fence in left center field to drive in Schuerman and Prieto to give Florida the 5-0 win.
The Gators are the only team still undefeated in the tournament. They will face Gardner-Webb in the final game tomorrow at 3 p.m.
