University of Florida's Christina Regan finished fourth in the pentathlon with a personal-best 3,743 points Friday to provisionally qualify and open the first day of the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships. Her performance put the Gators in fourth place after the first event of the meet.

"Ironically, when we sat down at the beginning of the year, we thought she could score in the mid 3,700s," said Florida women's track and field head coach Tom Jones. "We've been training hard all year long. This event is something that you have to work through in all your other meets. She was getting discouraged with her high jump and long jump. I told her to wait until we start resting and everything will start coming together. I'm really proud of her - to come in this meet and have four PRs, you can't do any better than that. Hopefully our team can feed off of this."

Regan began the competition in 11th place after the 60m hurdles, finishing in 9.02, which is a personal best. She moved into sixth place after a strong showing in the high jump. She cleared a season-best 1.69m/5-6.50 to put herself into scoring position.

In the third event, Regan notched another personal best, throwing 11.05m/36-3.00 in the shot put to move ahead another spot to fifth place with 2,309 points. Regan fell to seventh place after the long jump, in which she jumped 5.29m/17-4.25.

Regan finished third in the final event of the pentathlon, finishing the 800m in 2:22.18 to score a total of 3,743 points, setting a personal best by more than 300 points.

The Gator men's track and field team did not compete Friday.

Action gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday with the women's weight throw.
