Friday February 27, 2004Softball Wins Two in Home Tournament
The Florida softball team (14-2) won its first two games of the Cox Communications Classic Friday afternoon at the Florida Softball Stadium. The Gators defeated Jacksonville 1-0 and Winthrop 7-1.
In the first game of the day, Florida defeated in-state foe Jacksonville 1-0. Gator pitcher Jenny Gladding struck out 12 in the win, her seventh double-digit strike out game of the season. Her record improves to 6-2.
Florida scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Mylin Prieto drove a double through the left side and scored on a Lindsey Cameron RBI single up the middle.
Despite falling temperatures, the Gator bats warmed up for game two, as Florida tallied 10 hits to defeat Winthrop 7-1. The Gators scored in every inning
Florida scored first in the top of the second inning. With one out, Melissa Zick hit a double. Lacy Howard followed with a base hit to the short stop and advanced to second on the throw. Lindsay Norfleet walked to load the bases. Howard scored on a Michelle Diaz ground out to third to put Florida up 1-0.
The Gators added another run in the top of the third frame as Kristen Butler hit a two-out double down the left field line and scored on a Cameron base hit.
The fourth inning was a big one for the Gators as they scored three runs on a Lauren Roussell shot over the left field fence.
The Gators added another run in each of the fifth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Roussell walked with the bases loaded for her fourth RBI of the game. In the seventh Jenilee Garner scored on an error by the Winthrop second baseman.
Stacey Stevens earned the win from the pitching circle for Florida. Her record improves to 4-0 on the season. She struck out nine batters in the win and only gave up one run, which was not earned.
Florida continues Cox Communications Classic play tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against Connecticut and at 4 p.m. vs. Western Michigan.
