Saturday February 21, 2004Softball Sets School Record with 11th Straight Win
The Florida softball team (12-1) recorded its 11th straight win today with a 8-2 win over Crowne Plaza Classic host Houston in Houston, Texas. With the win and the previous win over No. 12/13 Nebraska, the Gators set a new school record with 11 straight wins. The previous record was nine games set in 2001.
Florida opened the game in a big way, scoring five runs on three hits and three errors is the top of the first. With one out in the inning, Lauren Roussell and Mylin Prieto hit back to back doubles to score Florida’s first run. The bases were loaded on two straight errors by the Houston third baseman. Prieto scored on a sacrifice fly by Melissa Zick and Rosen scored on a throwing error by the right fielder. Lindsey Cameron slammed home two more runs on a home run to right center field to put Florida up 5-0.
Florida scored again in the final frame. Roussell drew the lead off walk to start the inning. Prieto followed with a base hit. Shelley Stevens, running for Roussell, scored on Jenilee Garner double to center field. Prieto scored on a Kristen Butler ground out to second. Garner scored Florida’s final run on a base hit by Zick to make the score 8-0.
Houston scored their run in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter Candis Turbo reached on a fielder’s choice as leadoff batter, was thrown out at second. Jaci Gonzalez singled and Kim Nesloney followed with an RBI double. Amanda Moore came in to relieve Florida starting pitching Stacey Stevens. Houston scored its second run on a wild pitch.
Stevens earned the win for Florida, improving her record to 3-0 on the season. She record eight strikeouts in the win.
Florida is now 4-0 in the Crowne Plaza Classic. The Gators finish the Crowne Plaza Classic tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET against Centenary.
