Monday February 16, 2004Softball Wins USF Tournament
The Florida softball team improved to 8-1 on the season with a 4-0 shutout of the Hofstra Pride in Florida’s final game of the USF-Wilson Invitational. Florida won the tournament with a 3-0 record and was the only team in the rain shortened tournament with no losses.
The Gators played an excellent game from start to finish as they tallied 11 hits and the Gator pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts.
Florida scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Lauren Roussell led off the inning with a base hit through the left side. Jenny Gladding followed with a hit through the right side and advanced to second as Hofstra tried to catch Nikki Baldwin who was pinch running for Roussell, advancing to third. Baldwin scored on a Mandy Schuerman infield base hit to the short stop. Florida’s second run scored on a Kristen Butler infield base hit to the pitcher.
The Gators added two more runs two innings later. Schuerman led off the inning with a double to the center field wall. She scored on a triple to the right field wall by Butler. Butler scored on a Lacy Howard RBI single down the left field line to put Florida up 4-0.
Gladding struck out 12 while only giving up one hit in the win. She improves to 4-1 on the season. Amanda Moore pitched one inning of relief for Florida. Adrienne Clark received the loss for Hofstra.
Florida returns to action on Friday in the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Houston, Texas. Florida faces Manhattan College at noon Friday.
