Sunday February 15, 2004Softball Shuts Out Seton Hall 6-0
The Florida softball team (7-1) defeated Seton Hall 6-0 today in their second game of the USF-Wilson Invitational. The Gators used 10 hits and impressive pitching performances by freshman Stacey Stevens and senior Amanda Moore to secure the win.
Florida scored first in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, senior Mylin Prieto singled to right field. Freshman Lauren Roussell reached on a error by the third baseman. Jenny Gladding drew her first of three walks of the night to load the bases. Prieto scored on a wild pitch by pitcher Casey McDevitt.
The Gators added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Prieto started a Gator rally as she hit a ball deep to the shortstop and just beat out the throw to first. Freshman Shelley Stevens came in to pinch run for Prieto at first and stole second. She stole second on a Lauren Roussell sacrifice bunt. Jenny Gladding walked to put runners at first and third. Sophomore Nikki Baldwin pinch ran for Gladding and stole second. Junior Mandy Schuerman walked to load the bases for sophomore Kristen Butler. The Pirates put in Jessica Jones to relieve McDevitt in the pitching circle. Butler grabbed a McDevitt offering for a RBI single. Florida final tow runs of the inning scored on an error by the Pirate second baseman to put Florida up 4-0.
Florida added its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Michelle Diaz led off the inning with a double. Sophomore Lindsay Norfleet entered the game to pinch run for Diaz. Norfleet stole third with one out in the inning. Roussell hit a base hit down the right field line to score Norfleet. Gladding drew her third walk of the night. Butler hit her second RBI base hit of the day for Florida’s final run.
Stacey Stevens earned the win from the pitching circle for the Gators, improving to 2-0 on the season. She struck out eight batters, while senior Amanda Moore added two additional strikeouts in her inning of relief, to continue the Gators streak of 10 or more strikeouts in every game this season.
Prieto was 3-for-4 at the plate for Florida. Gladding was up to bat four times, but never recorded an at bat as she was hit by a pitch and walked three times. Lauren Roussell went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, while Kristen Butler recorded two of Florida’s three RBI for the game.
The Gators face Hofstra in their final game of the USF-Wilson Invitational Monday at 1:30 p.m.
