Saturday January 24, 2004Swim & Dive Easily Sweeps Alabama

In front of a full house of 1,237 fans, the No. 3 women's swimming and diving team and the No. 5 men's team swept the Alabama Crimson Tide in the final dual meet at home. The women rolled over the Tide 146-82, while the men handed Alabama its third loss this season, 135-94.

The women (10-2, 4-2 SEC) won or swam the fastest time in 11 of the 13 events. Senior Sara McLarty (DeLand, Fla.) had the most individual wins, with victories in the 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter freestyle (59.86).

Florida took the four spots in the next event, the 200-meter individual medley. McLarty swam her way to a first place finish with a time of 2:20.03. Junior Katie Kennedy (Ft. Myers, Fla.) finished second (2:24.14), and seniors Blair Beard (Sarasota, Fla.) and Casey Seland (Longwood, Fla.) came in third (2:28.13) and fourth (2:28.61), respectively.

Sophomore Jamie Tannhauser (Seattle, Wash.) swam her way to a first place finish in the 800-meter freestyle with a season-best time of 8:59.97, increasing UF's lead over Alabama 35-20 through three events.

In the 200-meter freestyle, junior Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) finished in first place with a season-best time of 2:06.00. The win pushed Florida's lead to 49-25.

The Gators took the top four spots in the 50-meter freestyle with senior Jaime Ellis (Spring, Texas) winning the event in a time of 27.15. Junior Katie McCann (Walpole, Mass.) finished second (27.74), followed by sophomores Mandy Huff (Gold Hill, N.C.) (27.98) and Mary Uhle (Sank Ingbert, Germany) rounded out the top four with a time of 28.10).

Junior Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C.) won the 200-meter butterfly in a time of 2:20.75, increasing UF's lead to 103-46 through seven events.

Freshman Leah Retrun (Columbus, Ind.) won the 200-meter backstroke in a time of 2:17.39, her eighth event win this season.

Senior Kristen Connor (Gainesville, Fla.) scored a season-high 299.47 on the three-meter to finish in third place. Her score also qualifies her for the NCAA Diving Zones.

The Gators sealed the win after finishing first in the 400-meter freestyle relay. The senior team of Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland), Seland, McLarty and Ellis touched the wall first in a time of 3:57.91.

On the men's side, Florida (7-3, 4-1 SEC) took the top two spots in the 400-meter medley relay with the relay team of junior Gabriel Mangaberia (Piratininga, Brazil), junior Corey Welch (Larksville, Pa.), sophomore Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and senior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) swimming to a first place finish in a time of 3:53.56. Senior Chris Kellam (Mt. Juilet, Tenn,), freshman Bill Mrazek (Tallahassee, Fla.), junior Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) and senior Scott Schultz (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) weren't far behind as they came in second with a time of 3:53.99.

Junior Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) finished first the 800-meter freestyle in a time of 8:24.87, nearly eight seconds faster than the second place time. The win gave Florida a commanding lead over Alabama, 41-13.

Jayme won his first individual event of the afternoon in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 23.29.

In the 200-meter individual medley, sophomore Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) won the event with a time of 2:05.63.

Jayme picked up his second win of the day in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 52.15, giving Florida a 93-56 advantage over Alabama.

Sophomore Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.) touched the wall first in the 200-meter backstroke in a time of 2:09.17.

Sophomore Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) won the one-meter with a zone qualifying score of 309.07 and also took top honors on the three-meter with another zone score of 354.47.

The senior class was honored prior to the meet.
