Friday January 16, 2004Men's Swim & Dive Sets Meet Record; Leads DMNC
The No. 5 ranked University of Florida menís swimming and diving team won four of nine events and set a meet record to stand in first after the opening day of competition Friday night at the Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Classic at Perkins Natatorium.
The Gators enter Saturdayís final day leading the three other teams at the meet with a score of 174 points. No. 14 Texas A&M, which the Gators defeated in a dual meet Thursday night, stand in second place (166) followed by SMU (162) and South Carolina (132).
The Gator foursome of senior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil), sophomore Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), junior Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) and junior Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) broke their own meet record set last season by swimming the 800-yard freestyle relay in a time of 6:34.26 Ė an NCAA provisional mark.
Florida also won the opening event of the evening in the 400-yard medley relay. Senior Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), sophomore Bill Mrazek (Tallahassee, Fla.), junior Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) and Jayme swam a school season best and provisional time of 3:17.30.
Lochte added a win in the 400-yard individual medley when he swam a season best and NCAA automatic time of 3:47.17 to win by nearly seven seconds. Sioui also added an individual win for the Gators as he claimed top honors in the 200-yard freestyle with a provisional mark of 1:39.06.
Several Gators also placed high on the evening. Jayme took second in the 50-yard freestyle (20.39), Mangabeira was second in the 100-yard butterfly (48.89), Kellam took second in the 100-yard back with a season best time of 49.49 and Mrazek also was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season best time (56.37).
Freshman Justin Schmidt (Falcon, Colo.) led the way for the Gators on the one-meter as he took third with a zone qualifying score of 295.40.
The Gators return to action Saturday for the second and final day of competition at the Dallas Morning News Classic at SMU. The meet is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. (EST) start.
