Becky Burleigh, Robin Fulton & Ashley Kellgren discuss UF's 1-0 NCAA Sweet 16 win vs UT w/ the m

The No. 3 seeded University of Florida soccer team defeated No.14 Tennessee 1-0 in NCAA Round of 16 play held Saturday in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 2,082 fans. Junior Ashley Kellgren iced the match with less than a minute to go with her first career penalty kick at 89:01. The game-wining goal was also her third in as many matches.

Florida (19-3-2) dominated much of the match, out-shooting the Lady Vols 11-4 on the day. Saturday marked the third meeting of the conference rivals this season. Previously, Tennessee upended the Gators 2-0 in Knoxville on Oct. 10 and the two teams tied 1-1 in the championship match of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. Tennessee earned the SEC Tournament trophy and the NCAA Tournament automatic bid by edging UF 7-6 in penalty kicks. Today was different though, according to Tennessee Head Coach Angela Kelly.

"I think the difference today was that Florida really took it to us," Kelly said. "When it was all said and done, the better team today won. I’m so proud of my team though."

The Gators best scoring chance of the first half came at 29:41 when a Melanie Booth corner kick somehow found the feet of Katie Johnston, who ripped a shot that was deflected by Tennessee goal keeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart to the head of Florida defender Ansley Myrick. Myrick headed the ball past the near post and over the end line.

Florida had control of the run of play for the majority of the second 45 minutes. Tennessee’s best chance came when a shot toward goal found Gator defender Monica Hoyles’ head instead of the back of the Florida net. Hoyles headed the ball to Florida keeper Brittni Goodwin and the ball was cleared.

Tennessee also mounted a scoring attack late in the game but could not break through a stingy Florida back line.

With a little over a minute left in the match, Florida took possession deep in its half. After some nice combinations to bring the ball through the midfield, Robin Fulton made a mad dash toward the Tennessee net. Fulton, who had become a fixture in the Lady Vol box in the second half, was fouled by UT defender Marie-Eve Nault and the penalty kick was awarded. Kellgren converted on the penalty kick with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.

"I knew Ashley would make the kick," Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "She has been practicing all week and she can go either left or right so it gives us some options."

This was the first Florida penalty kick this season taken by a Gator other than Dena Floyd. The senior midfielder was stopped on a penalty kick last week against Mississippi for the first time all season. Florida is now six-for-seven in penalty kicks in 2003. Burleigh said the decision was made earlier in the week that Kellgren would take any penalty kicks because the secret was probably out on where Floyd like to hit hers. For Kellgren, the penalty kick was a bit déjà vu.

"It’s funny that I scored like that," Kellgren said. "I dreamed last night that Robin or Crystal (Frimpong) got fouled and that I made the penalty kick to win the match. I was a little nervous, but I knew I would make it because I made it in my dream."

For the first time in the two team’s three meetings this season, Florida outshot UT. In goal, UF’s Goodwin recorded no saves, while UT’s Phillips-Bosshart turned in three saves.

Florida advances to play the winner of Sunday’s Florida State-West Virginia match in the NCAA Quarterfinal round. Florida defeated the Seminoles 2-0 Sept. 5 in Gainesville. Florida has never played West Virginia in the history of the program. This will be the Gators fourth appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals (1996, ’98, ’01). The NCAA will announce the location, day, and time of match late Sunday night.
