Saturday November 1, 2003No. 10 Florida Soccer Shuts-Out South Carolina 2-0

Gainesville, FL

Florida's four seniors were joined by their families in a pre-match ceremony at Percy Beard Stadium.

Seniors led the way for the No. 10 Florida soccer team Saturday afternoon at Percy Beard Stadium. The Gators (14-3-1, 6-2-1 SEC) ended their regular season schedule with a 2-0 victory over South Carolina (10-7-3, 3-4-2 SEC) courtesy of goals by seniors Megan McMillan and Robin Fulton.

The Gators got the early goal when McMillan squeezed through the Gamecock defense at 19:13. Assisting on the play was Fulton and Ashley Kellgren, who hit Fulton in stride down the middle where Fulton pushed the ball through to McMillan for the short shot.

For McMillan, it was her sixth goal of the season and ninth of her four-year career. McMillan was one of four seniors honored before halftime in a ceremony in which each was awarded a framed Gator jersey.

By far the largest crowd on the field for the pre-game ceremony was for Fulton, who scored the lone goal of the second half. She is the youngest of 14 and several family members were on hand for her Senior Day festivities. Fellow senior Crystal Frimpong crossed the ball just outside the box at 66:46 and Fulton converted for her second goal of the year and 11th on her career. For Frimpong, the assist gave her the 50th point of her collegiate career off 16 goals and 18 assists. She is the eighth Gator player to earn 50 or more points during their collegiate career.

Brittni Goodwin collected her sixth shutout on the year in a match which saw 39 players from both teams see action in front of 802 fans. Those who came for Senior Day were not disappointed.

"Our first goal was really nice and the second one was too," Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "All the goals were generated by seniors, which was kind of neat for Senior Day."

Senior tri-captain McMillan played every minute of the match for the first time in her career and shared Burleigh’s enthusiasm on each of the seniors play.

"It was great to account for all the goals, McMillan said. "It really shows what the seniors have meant to this team."

Senior Dena Floyd, who played her 15th complete match of the season, was also honored before the match. Also a captain, Floyd has started every match the past two seasons and played in every match of her career. Floyd registered one of the 15 Gator shots to South Carolina’s four.

Next up for the Gators is the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala. This year marks the first time the tournament will be held at a neutral site. Florida, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, will meet sixth-seeded Vanderbilt (8-6-3, 3-4-2 SEC) in the first round at 8:30 p.m. EST. The UF-VU match will be broadcast over the Internet. Gator soccer fans can hear play-by-play action of the match beginning at 8:30 p.m. (EST) at www.GatorZone.com. The "player" software (Windows Media Player or Real Player) needed to hear the Internet broadcast is available for free at the same site.
