Sunday October 19, 2003No. 9 Florida Soccer Defeats Vanderbilt 3-1

Gainesville, FL

Christine Johnson turned in a goal in UF's 3-1 win Sunday vs. Vanderbilt.

The No.9 University of Florida soccer team defeated Vanderbilt 3-1 Sunday at Percy Beard Stadium in front of 1,331 fans. Florida improves to 12-2-1, 4-1-1 SEC on the season while Vanderbilt drops to 6-6-2, 2-4-1 SEC.

Florida dominated much of the match, out shooting the Commodores 19-7 and registering a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Ashley Kellgren started the scoring for the Gators at 6:27 when she intercepted a Vanderbilt goal kick and took a 23-yard shot that deflected off the fingertips of Commodore goalkeeper Esther Thompson. Kellgren leads the Gators this season with seven goals.

"I think the keeper miss hit it a little bit," Kellgren said. "I was able to get a good touch on it and the goal was open so I took the shot."

Vanderbilt scored their only goal of the match at 28:58 when Gator goalkeeper Brittni Goodwin was unable to hold on to a Commodore free kick and forward Erin Higgins pushed it passed a disheveled Gator defense directly in front of goal line.

UF outshot the Commodores 13-6 in the opening 45 minutes and at moments the contest resembled Friday’s match with Kentucky, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate despite Florida holding a 17-6 shots advantage vs. the Wildcats.

"At halftime it felt a lot like Friday," Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "It was very frustrating to have some scoring chances that we could not put in."

Florida’s first goal of the second half of the match at 53:05 made history when Goodwin was credited with an assist. The freshman goalkeeper unleashed one of her deepest punts of the year, which found Kellgren. She hit a streaking Stephanie Freeman eight yards out who tallied her sixth goal of the year. On the play, Goodwin became the first Florida goalkeeper in Florida history to register an assist.

The Gators added their last goal of the day when Crystal Frimpong found Christine Johnson from 12 yards out at 81:36. Freeman also added her fifth assist of the season.

Goodwin turned in three saves Sunday in goal for UF while VU’s Thompson posted nine saves.

The Gators hit the road this weekend with matches against Mississippi State on Friday, Oct. 24 and No. 22 Mississippi on Sunday, Oct. 26. Both matches will be broadcast on www.Gatorzone.com.
